I have had this PS2 since 2003. One day I had the disk tray open, and the power went out for a good amount of time. After it went back on, I closed the tray, and a few days later, I hit eject, and the tray only went out halfway, then went back in. I was like "Hmm, what could cause this?" So I opened it up, and the cover for the DVD drive. With the cover gone, it opens all the way. With the cover on the drive, It goes out halfway, then back in. I know there is a magnet on the cover, So I guessing its a worn out Motor, cuz it seems like it doesn't have enough torque anymore to pull the bottom motor to spin the disk down, and allow the tray to move out. It was working fine before It was left open. I gave up after that. Now, its almost a year since then, and I pulled it out to see how its doing, but, I forgot that I ripped the power/reset ribbon cable, and the button was dropped and exploded. Now, im going to order that, but im wondering if its a fix that I could do to the DVD drive, or just order one fully.

Hey, a post for the PS2! Awesome =D

Your best bet would be to replace the drive with a brand new drive, but you can probably somehow fix the drive, but I'm not so sure, maybe the cover is what is causing it to not open all the way
So pretty much you can just order a new drive or just try a few things, and yeah
Hope you manage to fix it!

Here is a little future update, from 2018. I got the new drive and the PS2 is working fine now. I use it sometimes to play usually some games, but not all the time. It works fine and hopefully will last longer now, but eventually it will die from old age, either the PSU, CPU, GPU, or whatever.
