Upgrading RAM on dual channel

I'm currently running my computer with 2x4Gb RAM, these are currently in DDR3_2 & 1 (both grey), which I think means that they're paired to work as a dual channel system?

If I wanted to upgrade my RAM memory, do I need to get the same again in the other two slots to keep dual channel? Or could I get a pair of 8Gb sticks and keep dual channel, either in 2x4 & 2x8 or 4+8 & 4+8? Based on similar questions I think if it would work I'd have to go for the latter, but either way I might lose the dual channel functionality...

Solution
1. Best that all sticks be same and arrive in the same package. They are tested and guaranteed to work together.

2. 2 x 8 GB is better than 4 x 4 GB

3. Adding 2 x 4GB to an existing 2 x 4Gb comes with no guarantee.... basically a crap shoot, tho the slower your RAM, the better chance of success. DDR3 1600 will work just about all the time ... I wouldn't chance it at 2400 and above

Best option ... sell the 2 x 4GB and buy 2 x 8GB. 2nd best ... buy an exact duplicate of what you have and hope you come out well. Boost DRAM voltage a bit before giving up tho.
