Hi guys.
To sum it up.

I am gonna start my engineer education next year, for this i will need a laptop that can run some of the software needed.

i am in a bit of a bind here though.
I can see that i can get a fairly new setup from amd for about 750EURO, but if i where to go for intel, i would hit 1000euro fast.

Lets say i was looking at the amd A8-7410 vs i7-3630QM.
the amd comes with r7m360 gpu
while the intel comes with the old but reliable NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5.

On the benchmark the intel outscores the amd by far, but is it really the same in action ?

Is there absolutely no point in looking for amd when i need a fairly strong computer ?

Keep in mind i have never touched amd, but going from stationary to laptop i feel like im on thin ice :)

Thanks.

can't agree with you at all there. The OP has outlined that hes is doing an engineering course. The Amd APU is a terrible performer. The I7 will eat it for breakfast. For the needs of the OP the I7 is perfect. It will give him the CPU grunt to...

The intel laptop would have the best performance.
The AMD would have the cheaper price point.
Between the two I would say buy the AMD one as the performance I can see in benchmarks makes it obvious that the AMD laptop is a better price to performance.
Unless you absolutely need to drain every drop of performance out of your future laptop, I think the AMD would do just fine.

There are new AMD Laptops coming out soon though, take a look at those before deciding.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Okay.
So unless i wanna play farcry or some other stupid fps with ultra high settings, the amd is the better worth for my money ?
I just need a computer to browse a little, play some guildwars for 2-3 hours a week.
And then like 20-30 hours pull some heavy construction Engineering software.
i dont need a fancy name or brand, but i know the intel has its worth somewhere, i just dosent know if its for hardcore overclockers or if its allso worth for my usage.

i would cry if i had jittering software.

Apart from pricing, as you rightly pointed out, there is absolutely no reason to choose the AMD platform.

Its construction engineering.
Well, my current laptop mostly serve as my video slave when i go to bed, but it can barely manage some software like AutoCad 2018 and such.
Some of these softwares are heavy from time to time.

And i would allso need it for 2-3 hours gaming weekly, i just need to know that i have the option if i wanted to.,
Security issues of a former gamer xD

see my last post. Get the I7 machine. The AMD apu will not help you in engineering software. It's apoor performer. If you want to save money go for AMD. If you want a machine that can handle your engineering software with ease, and help you, go for the I7

Yea, i read it afterwards.

Looks like im better off with 3-4 year old technology from intel, compared to new technology from amd.

Thanks

that just proves how bad AMD CPU's were before they came out with ryzen this year

yeah, its been a sad state of affairs for the last few years in the CPU realm. With Intel having it all there own way.
Thank god AMD came up with something competitive this time around. Ryzen is a good platform. With another 2-3 years of CPU upgrades on current AM4 boards. Its great. Now it will push Intel to actually give more than the usual tick-tock 5-10% increase in IPC.

Amd have been so far behind for so long. Intel are bringing out some decent chips right now, with Skylake X and Kayblake X. But AMD have thread-ripper to come too. Exciting times in the CPU world.
