Impact of Underclocking RAM

I just bought an X58 motherboard and a Xeon x5670 for my second rig. The board has 6 ram slots, and I already have 16GB (4 DIMMS at 1600MHz). I also have an extra 2 4GB sticks laying around, but are a different brand (Kingston) and are 1066MHz.

I am going to use the rig for both productivity (FLStudio, Vegas, etc) AND Gaming (GTAV being one game)

Is the underclock going to be a big performance hit? Keep in mind that this would go from dual-channel mode to triple channel, too.

Games like high frequency, down stepping your cycles will impact fps (as you have more than 12GB ram already, deminishing returns). You might lose 5-10 depending on the games youre playing, but if your current fps is 100+ then you wont notice it much at all unless youre playing fps and need those extra few fps to avoid fuzz.

Do you consistantly exceed 16gb ram using studio? - then yes another 8 will ensure you dont cache to hdd which should increase productivity. Tried a 16GB+ readyboost? Thats if you dont have a ssd already.

I find rainmeter comes with a nice cpu / ram / swap tracker as standard, needing no configuration. That will indicate to you if you need to increase your ram when youre using studio no doubt.

(i call pagefile - swapfile, and so does rainmeter).

finally: Remember that many warnings are given about mixing ram types ... because it can impact systems in more than just performance.
