So this is my first pc build and as you can imagine I'm a bit of a noob, I have an msi z270 sli motherboard with 4 black colored ram slots and one 16gb ram stick. I don't know what slot to put it in and I consulted the motherboard manual. Really stuck and don't want to screw up my pc.

If you only have 1 stick of RAM, it doesn't matter drastically. Your manual should explain which one to use first, but realistically as long as you put it in slot 1 or 2 you'll be fine as it'll be dual channel.

Generally speaking, There should usually be a stick of RAM in the closest spot to the CPU. So if you only have one stick, that's where I'd put it

you need to check your motherboard manual. some require you to have it in a certain slot like slot 1 or A
