Hi all,

I bought a pre-built gaming PC last year and over that period I have learned a lot about PC gaming and components. The PC I currently have is AMD based and wish to move to Intel to play my games on ultra without having to worry about fps and overheating.

My budget is £700 - £1,500 and my build I have made through PC Specialist is:

CPU: i7-7700k (4.2Ghz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270X-Ultra Gaming
RAM:16GB
GPU: GEFORCE GTX 1080 8GB
1st HD: 240GB SSD
2nd HD: 2TB HD
Cooling: Corsair H55 Hydro Cooler (liquid cooling)

any opinions or changes that could be made would be appreciated. Thanks

What resolution do you intend to play at? A GTX 1080 may be overkill for 1080p gaming, with a 1070 likely more fit for purpose. Although >120Hz and for longevity, it may not be a horrible idea.

Ryzen presents a compeling offering. While Intel's chips do have a slightly better IPC, which will help in gaming - Ryzen's additional cores/threads without any *huge* tradeoff in clock speed should be considered carefully.

As for PC Specialist, that's a system builder as far as I can see? I'd suggest building it yourself - especially if you've spent the last year learning about components etc.

The build itself is ok-ish.
*A 7700K on Z270 is a solid gaming option (but again, consider Ryzen)

*You'd want DDR4 speeds >2666MHz....and if it's not specifying, assume JEDEC standard (2133MHz) which is not really optimate.
*An H55 is a pretty basic CPU cooler. If you want to overclock, I'd suggest a higher end Air or AIO cooler. If you're happy at stock, I'd stick with an air cooler opposed to budget AIO's.
*There's no PSU mentioned. Custom builders generally use whatever they have on hand (which they could buy in bulk for cheap), which rarely ends up being a quality unit.

I'd suggest somehting like this:

That may need a separate AM4 mounting bracket from Noctua directly.

You could option for the 1600 with the included cooler - sufficient to OC some, and save a bit of cash.

OR, if your monitor makes it worthwhile, you can just about squeeze a 1080TI in there too

Or some combination of those options (1600X + NH-D15 + 1080TI puts you a little over budget, but not by a lot).
