Computer won't start at all after I switched off psu when only motherboard and hhd turned on.

Initially, my computer which I just upgraded the psu, motherboard and CPU cooler of won't turn on, so I tried holding down the on switch. Afterwards, only the motherboard and hard drive turned on, but everything else stayed off, and the debug led indicated a problem with CPU.

I tried turning it off, but it wouldn't turn off so I switched off psu and now computer will not turn on at all. I've tried reconnecting the CPU cables to the powersupply but still nothing happens.

Is my motherboard / CPU broken? While installing the CPU cooler I initially forgot to mount it in a cross pattern and screwed one side in before the other side. Did that have any effect on the CPU?

Solution
Hi,

at that point I would test with a known working PSU.
If the computer still behave the same you probably have a problem with motherboard

Well then. First off, what hardware are we talking about?
What was the previous motherboard?
What is the new motherboard?
What is the CPU?
Which power supply model?
Do you still have old power supply?
Which CPU cooler?
What was the purpose of the motherboard upgrade?

You have some good ideas. It is possible to mess the a CPU up with improper heatsink mounting. For older chips it could actually break the CPU die. On LGA (Intel) chips it is easy to crush the pins under the CPU with too much force. AMD PGA chips are a little more robust, but they could still be damaged.

With enough force even the motherboard can buckle and crack. I doubt you managed that though.

When in doubt, complete reassembly is a good idea. You may have missed something and can't see the tree for the woods, if you catch my meaning.

I suspect a short somewhere, or your new power supply is DOA and doesn't work right.

Do you think the fact that I switched off the powersupply when the motherboard and hhd were turned on the first time I powered the system up bricked the motherboard?

i have done that, perhaps, hundreds of time on recent years, never killed a single pc this way, post the system specs and the picture requested, you asked for help twice and you are not cooperating here, we can't guess what is going on without more information

I have tried using old psu and it works now so the issue was the psu if that makes you feel less frustrated

Thanks! I've reinstalled the CPU like Eximo said and used the old psu and it powered up fine. Must be the new psu's issue
