Sarofendor :
So I have an i5 6600k which I have gotten up to 4.7 GHz at 1.42 volts and my temps are good at under 70 after 15 minutes of AIDA 64 stability test. I wanted to know whether having a high voltage in itself is dangerous, or whether it is the temperature that often accompanies it which is the danger? Also, should I reduce the overclock despite my seemingly safe temperatures? Help is greatly appreciated.
Anything running out of specification is going to affect the lifetime of your components. Yes, the increased voltage is going to shorten the lifespan of your CPU. Like mdd said, no one knows when your CPU is going to fail.
My system has a custom water cooling setup so the temps are low, yet I still run the CPU and GPU at a lower clock speed than their maximum possible overclocks.
The maximum I would run for an everyday setup would be 1.395v. I'd find what top speed I could get out of it with that voltage.
