Hi,

I have just built my first computer and have several questions. (I’ll make a separate post for each question to kis)
Specs are:
ASUS Prime X370 mainboard
Ryzen 7 1700 CPU
16GB 2400 RAM
Radeon Pro WX4100 GPU
Samsung 960Pro drive
750w PSU
Windows 10Pro

Question:
I have just copied over my files and photos etc from my external back up drive to the new computer and i see that the copying speed was only between 2MB/s and 30MB/s

The back up drive is a WD My Book with a USB 3.0 connection, connecting to 3.0 on my pc.

Should the transfer rate not be faster than this and, if so, what is causing the low speed?

Solution
A high density external can reach up to 120 mBps but most will top out around 60-80 mBps.

This though is for large files (think video and programs that are 500MB or bigger), when transferring many small files this speed gets greatly reduced because it is spending more time seeking then it is actually writing.
