The problem: My PC will freeze after about 5 seconds from waking it up from sleep mode, this has been happening for over a year now. I was able to live with it for the past period but not anymore.

It is a 5 years old build. Last month I “upgraded” it with bits from ebay:

  • added an SSD and did a fresh install of Windows 10
    replaced CPU
    replaced graphics card
    swapped the power supply
but the problem is still the same

I researched the problem and tried the following without any success:

  • changed the power setting for hard drive turn off time to “Never”
    disabled hibernate
unticked “allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” option for the wireless adapter
Tested the RAM for errors using windows memory diagnostic tool
    Updated the BIOS
Updated the chipset and GPU driver

The build:

  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Motherboard: ASUS maximus IV extreme rev 3.0 P67 (4 years old)
Boot drive: Samsung 750 Evo 120GB SSD
    HDD: 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM
CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1270 (added last month) – standard Intel cooler
    RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) corsair vengeance DDR3 1600 (4 years old)
GPU: NVidia GTX 780 (added last month)
    PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750W
    TP-Link TL-WN881ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter (added 2 years ago)
Card reader: generic (added last month)
Samsung DVD writer (4 years old, unused)
Case: Thermaltake chaser MK1 (4 years old)
    Mouse: Generic
    Keyboard: standard Lenovo

I think the problem is narrowed down to two components: motherboard or wifi card, but I never had any other problem with them at all…

Any advice, opinion or comments are welcome. Thank you

Sleep in Windows 10 has always been a pain for me too. I couldn't figure it out, so I stopped sending it to sleep, and instead started locking it (windows key + L). I know that doesn't solve the problem, hopefully someone else will have a better answer
