I just bought a pcie x8 networking card and my motherboard doesn't have a pcie x8 slot. It only has pci and pcie x16. with it work if i use the pice x8 card with a pcie x16 slot.

Solution
No problem. A pci-express card can always be put into a slot with more lanes than it needs (such as an x1 card in an x4 slot or an x8 card in an x16 slot). The reverse isn't always true, but there are exceptions - some motherboards have open-ended pci-express slots (which can technically accept cards that want more lanes, but they'd run with throttled bandwidth).

I'm not familiar with FreeNAS, but I'm guessing that's more a matter of whether there are FreeNAS drivers available for the networking card you bought (which you haven't specified the model of yet) than whether you put the card in an x8 or an x16 slot.
