Issue from sharing internet connection from computer to router when the computer is turned off

Hello, for personnal reasons with a specific program i need a direct connection from my modem to my computer. However i still want the wifi to be accessible to everyone in the house, therefore i connected my router to my computer and shared the connection, everything works perfectly when the computer is on. (i am using 2 ethernet cables and 1 usb to ethernet adapter for the connections)

However when my computer is in sleep mode or turned off, the wifi connection is also turned off.

Is there a way for the connection to still be shared when the computer is off or in sleep mode?

Thank you.

Unless you were using a wireless ISP...WiFi makes no difference.
Your modem is what is publicly presented. After that, your router serves up internal addresses, either wired or WiFI.

However, your public IP address can and does change. At the whim of...

So when you connected your PC to the router via ethernet, was there a reason you 'shared' that connection? You should not need to do that, as the wifi is shared anyway (provided that people know the network key)
What happens when you disable the connection sharing?

EDIT: I have just realised how you have this set up!

Main reason is when the power is off, it is closing the network connections completely. Therefore it will not pass the internet connection through the PC.
Has the modem got more than one ethernet connection on it? If it has i would bypass the pc with the other lead straight to the router.
If it has not got a spare port, get an ethernet splitter hub.

Hope this helps.

Modem->PC->router->Other systems.

If that is the way you have it connected....all the other systems will not work if the PC is OFF.

Alright thank you, just as i thought.

Is there a way to keep my desktop ''open'' without it using too much ressources? For now i set up some kind of ''away mode'' and am using the power saving option (i set 5% max cpu, can i go lower?) which works alright for now, but my fans are still working and lighting up. I use windows 7.

Or is it simply not that bad to keep it running for long periods of time?

Thank you!

Let's go back to the original problem, instead of workarounds.
What is the reason for this particular PC and software to go direct to the modem, and not to the router?

The config should be:
Modem->router->devices.

Having that system on all the time is not deadly, but just a waste.

I agree, the original problem is that i have connection issues with a game (can take up to 20 tries and i have to connect up to 8 accounts..) unless i connect directly my modem to my computer, using my router (that also acts like a 10/100/1000 switch) does not work. The connection speed is not the problem, the quality of my connection is flawless recently.

So i assume it has to do with my ip / internet provider and thegame company. The game company refuses to help no matter what, and last time i called my provider it was useless, he simply told me ''reset your modem and router, that's all we can do'' (he actually called them the black and white box, don't think he knew much at all haha).

So i set up the connection that works for now, but my other option would be to change my ip address maybe? I am with videotron and have a D-Link ''DIR-825'' router.

Last time i called i asked about changing my ip address but the other person told me it was impossible (he was a pretty bad support, maybe i can get someone better if i call again?)

Any other option to change my ip? Asking them to replace my router maybe or have a modem with 2 ethernet port? I read about changing my MAC address and then restarting my modem but haven't really tried it yet.

Thank you very much everyone for your help! I can work with what i have now if i need to, but i love experimenting and learning about this stuff hahaha

I know of no game or application that can tell the difference between:
Modem->PC
or
Modem->router->PC

Changing your IP address?
I can't see how that has anything to do with it, unless the game server and its moderators have decided to block you for some reason.

There are other things going on here.

Well i can connect the 8 accounts, makes things easier/faster and it is normal on this game.

Well, i was told that using a VPN solves the issue (should've mentioned that earlier ) but since it's against the rules i haven't tried it though, i also have a different ip if i connect directly from my modem and my router has a ''static'' one ranging from ''192.168.xxx.100 to 192.168.xxx.999'' while my modem one is something in the 184.xxx.xxx.xxx .

I don't know too much about this, still learning, but i don't know what else could explain the problem.

The 192.168.xxx.xxx is simply your internal IP addresses. No one outside your house sees those.
That is served up by your router.
Your public IP address is given to you by your ISP. 184.xxx.xxx.xxx.

Oh cool, glad to know that. yeah the games says my ip is in the 184.xxx.xxx.xxx, but it says that it's a different one from my last connection which was through wifi i think ( quite a few différent numbers changed not just the last ones).

Do you have an idea about the problem?

No, they won't manually change it. But unless you pay them extra for a static public IP address...it can change.

The other problem?
I'm not sure of what it is, so no...no idea.

Possibly the game server and admins have an issue with running 8 accounts from the same connection.
Is that allowed in the game TOS? If it is, you should be able to ask the game admins what the deal is.

Well thank you for all your help, yes it is allowed in the tos and the admins don't have an issue with it, i can barely connect 1 account anyway, they won't help but my ''solution'' works ok for now so there's that.

Thank you very much for you time and help!
