Hello all, my current build has an i7 4790k, 16 gb ram and a gtx 970. Just two days ago I changed my pcie power cables for some custom sleeved ones and when i powered on my pc i noticed that while my idle cpu temps were fine, whenever i opened an app like chrome the temps randomly jumped to 50 and back to 30 for a split second. I dont recall this happening before. Also, ive noticed that my cpuz benchmark score might be 20-30 points lower than usual. I am getting 20-30% cpu usage when watching youtube, however, when gaming, my temps and usage are normal, maybe even lower, and my frame rate is still really smooth. I am really confused. I booted up today and got an error message and had to reboot again but everything was fine! I don't think i could have given static damage as i used a grounding strap and was standing on wood.

Solution
An I7 will shoot to higher clock speeds, depending on load, so I assume a flash of temp rise would be normal. My ROG I7 laptop with max out around 3.3 as needed for gaming. But idles around 2 gig. Intel used to have a monitor that ran on the desktop that monitor clock speeds, it was pretty nice when building a new PC. Intel Speedstep Monitor I think it was. It was discontinued but I dug around and found the program. Runs on 8.1 nicely.

I stand corrected, it's available and has been updated
Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor 3.0

Here's a video of it running to show the CPU throttling up and down.
