It's not about being lazy and that insults every programmer world wide. The higher ups put deadlines on when the game gets done so they can make money asap. For a feature that hardly matters to anyone, they won't approve time/money on it vs making the actual game, optimizing for common configs, and fixing game bugs. You already see games get delayed or have serious 0 day bugs because corporate wants to push it. It's business. Even sli/cf gets bad support on many games and that's less complicated than mixed.
