cheapest way to build 6 extended monitors

Solution
If you need to run only 6 displays, you can buy sapphire-gpro-6200

It's basically newer, cheaper Radeon FirePro from Sapphire. I went with 2x gtx 1050 TI though, because I wanted semi passive cooled cards + 8 displays option. If you'll spend a lot of time glued to computer screens, you don't want to hear your PC running, it can drive you crazy, trust me :)

You could also go with gtx 1050 with 4 display outputs + GT 710 if price matters to you. It might be better option then going with Firepro or GPro 6200 as you are required to have active display adapters for more than 2 monitors. After the first 2 monitors all will require an Active adapter...

Try looking for a Matrox C680 graphics card. It might not be the cheapest, but it's the kind of thing you want.

I don't think a HDMI splitter with spread your desktop over several montiors. Which I think is what you are suggesting. A Splitter will simply take your graphics card output and send it to 2 or more monitors. Exactly the same content.

I would be cool though to have an external device that takes a 5760x3240 as input and pushes it across 6 outputs.

Cheapest way is to go the DisplayPort route. An HDMI splitter will duplicate the output only. Most graphic cards only have one HDMI port, so it's not a good way to go.

With display port, even a cheap Radeon RX 470 can support 6 monitors. It should cost about $180, but right now there is a shortage which is causing insane inflation in prices.

Then, you'll need a DisplayPort MST hub, or if your monitor has a DP output, you can daisy-chain the DP cables. Or you can buy a second graphic card and use the DP on those.

If you would rather go the pro way, the Radeon Pro WX4100 also supports up to six displays, also requiring a MST hub or monitors that can daisy-chain.

Cheapest of the cheap is to buy 2 GeForce GT 710 GPUs for 30 bucks each and enable Internal graphic processor (IGP) in your MB Bios. https://www.alternate.de/MSI/GeForce-GT-710-1GD3H-LP-Grafikkarte/html/product/1370152?
That will give you support for at least six monitors in extended mode, but not one big screen "eyefinity" mode, which as a trader you don't need.
