What should my fans settings be on a MSI 1080 8gig card?

Hello,

I currently have a MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G Graphics Card. I have not gamed on my PC much the last few months, but started getting back into it. I was recently playing Rocket League locked at 62fps and my card would stay in the 65 to 70 c range. I decided to push the card more, and am allowing the max 200+ fps during game play.

I currently have no issues with it, but I did notice that the card is pushing almost 80c on warmer days like yesterday. SO I installed MSI after burner to set a fan profile on it. Are there any issues pushing the fans at a 70% to 80% for long periods of time? I would prefer the card not get any warmer then 75c. I don't know if the 80c is where it sat, but I let HW Monitor run during a game session and 80 was the highest it got.

I guess I am looking for advice on the fan speed settings. The card is fairly new, and the fans never kick on unless I start gaming, but Afterburner defaults have the fans on at 40% all the time. Any suggestions on settings?

My entire rig can be found here at PC Parts Picker:

80c is fine for that card. I would not run the fans at 40% at all times, that's just totally unnecessary and if anything you are likely decreasing the lifespan of its fans which are not replaceable. The fans will likely die long before the gpu does, especially if you are running them close to max under load and at 40% idle.

However the 1080 will likely be near obsolete and due for an upgrade by the time the fans or the gpu core dies, so honestly unless you plan on keeping that card for a decade just do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

I run my fans higher simply because while annoying, it's less trouble to replace the fans or even mount an aio cooling solution for it. Trying to buy a new card cause I burnt out my current one, at prices at which they are today is simply not an option for me.
Also default temp at which these fans are set to start, causes my fans to constantly start and stop with a grating sound. I set it higher so they start up earlier and stay on, avoiding this scenario. Up to you really...

That card is not going to burn up at 80c. There is no point of beating on the fans when your card is at a perfectly acceptable temp. The fans of that card are attached to the shroud they cannot be replaced, you would need to buy a whole new cooler or shroud if you could find one.

I adjusted the fans to stay off while idle. Stock settings had it doing that as well, and it just didn't make sense to me to have then run at 40% all the time either. I have it set to keep the fans off until it reaches 45c, then they kick on. Then when it reaches 50c, then fans kit on at about 50%. 80c they kick up to about 75%.

I wasn't sure what the card should or could run at. And I am sure I will replace the card before it dies. I just like to learn/tinker and make sure I know about all my gear ;)

Thanks for the replies fellas!

Hey guys, im I'm back with an update here. I decided to overclock the gpu with MSI afterburner and Valley benchmark. I'm in the process of the overclock settings now.

So far, the core clock at 150 boost seems to be running stable. 200 didn't work, 175, 160, and 155 showed temporary black screen crashes, so I dialed back to 150. Seems pretty stable so far with the card running at about 80 to 88c. How long should I run the benches for to see if it will continue to sit stable? And is 88 to 90c still safe temps? Or should I boost the fans a bit...

90C is a little high so you should run fans higher to hit 85C at max.
If the tests don't fail first 30min-hour you should be fine. Some run them for hours and so on, but if something is obviously wrong, you should crash within 10-15 min.
