I just purchased an Asus 710-2-SL-CSM GeForce GT710 2GB GPU. I had checked before my purchase on PC Part Picker that it should be compatible with my Asus M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard. However, when I attempted to install the GPU, I very quickly realized that it does not go into the normal GPU slot, and from what I can tell, I have no slot that fits this card. Is this accurate or am I missing something obvious like it can be placed in a slot where it does not fill it entirely, etc. I am quite upset because I was hoping to get my computer back up and running today and I thought there would be no problems. Can someone help me out?

The GPU is PCI-E 8x but will work in a 16x slot it just won't fill the whole slot. When using a single gpu you should use the top(blue) 16x slot.
I currently have a 4x card running in one of my 16x slots and have even used 1x cards in 16x slots
I don't know why you bought such a weak graphics card, but anyway, it will fit the motherboard. Without seeing the card you've got, I'm going to guess it uses a PCIe 4x slot and your motherboard will come with a 16x and a few 1x slot......here's the thing, a 4x card will work in the longer 16x slot, half the slot will be empty, but it will work. Simply insert it so that the raised divider in the slot on the motherboard goes into the slot in the card.

Hey, would you mind helping me out a bit more? I did specifically say I am using an Asus 710-2-SL-CSM GeForce GT710 2GB DDR3 GPU. Now that you know the exact GPU I am referring to, is your advice still the same? Should I try to put it into my PCI Express 2.0 slot that is much longer? The blue one or the black one? I tried doing that gently at first and it seems as though it does not want to fit in that way. Could you link me to a video that shows how to do this sort of installation? I'm pretty upset that no one would mention such an obvious weird feature anywhere.
