CPU Temperature spiking and dropping constantly???

Hi,

I'm running an i7-6700K non OC along with a Corsair Hydro Series™ H115i Water cooler.

My temperatures have been spiking for the last few days, while the PC is idle. CPU usage at idle is usually between 10 & 20% with the odd bounce to 25%. But the package temp of the CPU is constantly changing from 29/30oC up to 44oC and sometimes hitting 55oC while idle.

This is causing the fans on my water cooler to rev up much faster, then instantly slow down.

Can anyone assist with what might be causing these spikes in temperature? Do you think it's purely a thermal paste issue, or could it be a sensor problem?

Thank you.

Solution
it could be possible that the cooler wasn't mounted on the cpu correctly or that the thermal paste didn't spread evenly can you try to reseat the cooler on the cpu and see if that helps?
