GPU overheat and monitor black screen

I'd like some help please. When playing any pc game, after ~5 minutes the monitor will lose input from the pc and go to black screen/standby mode, although the game appears to continue playing as the music continues. I have to hold down the restart button and the pc will restart as normal. This occurs with any game.

My set up:
Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 4460 @ 3.20GHz 32 °C
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z97M-DS3H (SOCKET 0) 28 °C
Graphics
BenQ GL2250H (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Gigabyte)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (Gigabyte) 44 °C
ForceWare version: 384.76
SLI Disabled
Storage
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1SB10C (SATA) 32 °C
1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 (SATA) 31 °C
Optical Drives
ATAPI DVD A DH24ABS
Audio
High Definition Audio Device

What I have tried so far:
- updating monitor drivers
- updating Nvidia graphics drivers
- stress testing each component using Burnin Test.

Each component passed individually; however, when I conducted the full test of all components, my pc failed the temperature test. Apparently my GTX 970 reached 91C! So if it's reaching the safety threshold (90C) and cutting out all together, while everything else is running, this could account for the monitor black out. Still, although it seems hugely likely, I'm not 100% certain, so I'd prefer not to spend loads on a cooling system if I can find another solution. I'm really puzzled as to why this is happening now - I've had this set up for 1.5 years now and never experienced this before. Previously, the max temperature after several hours of gaming was in the 70s. Now it can't even survive a stress test, or 5 minutes of any game!

So, what I'd like to know is:
- how can I be sure that temperature is the cause of the black screen?
- how can I ensure my GTX 970 doesn't get so hot and then see if this solves the black screen? (preferably without having to spend £££££££!)
- if the temperature is not the cause, how can I resolve this problem?

Thank you in advance for your support.

If your RPM is at 0 and you haven't touched your card at all, likely your fans are dead.
You can check this by unplugging your fans from your graphics card (this will involve taking the shroud apart, just like you would when changing thermal paste), and then plugging them directly into the motherboard to see if they would spin (you would boot with on-board graphics, completely take out your card). If they don't spin, I would get a new shroud personally, like this:

I'd get the twin turbo II to not break the bank.
Or you can go for a cheaper option by looking on ebay for someone selling the fans for your exact card model since you don't mention which gigabyte 970 you have. For...

Indeed - it's a problem I'd like to resolve. A gaming pc is not much use to me if it's too hot to function, assuming, of course, that exceeding the 90C temperature threshold is the cause of the black screen. According to GPU-Z, GPU fan speed % is currently 23%, fan speed RPM is 0. I can certainly try replacing the thermal paste on the GPU.

PSU is a Corsair CS550M, model 75-010707.

Thank you, that's a great suggestion. I'll report back once I've been able to test all the above suggestions.

Hi all, just checked the GPU inside. Paste is a little dry and has spread over the edges, but that's not the worst of it. I can confirm that the fan is 100% dead. Does not power up at all. I think an aftermarket case is the way to go.

Thanks both for helping identify the issue - fingers crossed this will solve it! :D
