How does RAM work?

I builded a new pc and it went good but my games fps lagg so i googeled that 4 gt is pretty low and that 8gt is minium but if i have 2x4 does that mean i have8 gt or do i need to have 2 8 gt to have 8 gt in my pc how does this work


I have gtx 960 (just updated)

That was quite hard to follow, but by gt i assume you mean GB?

2x4GB means that you have 2 lots of 4GB modules, which means you have 8GB in total.
2x8GB means that you have 2 lots of 8GB modules, which means you have 16GB in total.

For modern day gaming, 8GB is pretty much minimum required as many require more than 4GB.

Also, 2x4GB is better than 1x8GB
