can't tell if it will work

Hey guys, currently I'm trying to figure out if my I7 980 is better than my i3 3220. Here are the two specs I could possibly do

Current:
I3 3220
2x4gb ram (faster speeds I want to say then the other build)
Zotac gtx 660

Plan:
I7 980
4x6gb (24gb) (ram speeds not super important though I'm sure in my case)
Zotac gtx 660 and evga gtx 660 in sli

I don't believe I can over clock the 980, I prefer not to, I actually get better performance in certain games so far oddly, halo 5 and chivalry ran at higher settings at a better framerate than my i3 (chiv ran fine on the i3 but halo 5 was garbage on it, I don't plan on playing it any further just testing) but I was able to get pretty high settings out of the original metro 2033 while using the i3, but my I7 gave pretty stuttery performance, either it dropped to 30 or stuttered around 60

The current tests with my I7 have been in single gpu mode, I don't have the other gtx 660 on me atm

Any thoughts?

According to this:

Both CPUs are in the same tier, so overall performance is pretty close. it would depend on the individual game. In games optimized for more cores, the I7 would shine, while single threaded games not so much
