Ethernet/LAN connection not working

I know this to be a fault with my pc's software or hardware, as I am able to achieve perfect wired connectivity instantly when plugging the ethernet cable into other devices, such as a laptop.

I custom-built my desktop PC, and I have installed the LAN driver- listed under device manager as "RealTek PCIe GBE Family Controller". I have also installed the chipset recently, in case this caused the problem. However, this did not appear to change anything. My motherboard has two LED lights next to the LAN port that indicate that from a hardware perspective, the Ethernet connection to my PC is functional. I am running Windows 7, 64-bit. I am running the Ethernet connection through a powerline adapter, but I don't think this is relevant as I am able to achieve a connection with it on a laptop as stated previously.

My motherboard is the MSI Z97-G55 SLI.

If anyone could solve this I would really appreciate it.

Your laptop probably also has a wireless connection, are you sure that the connection that is working on it is from Ethernet and not the WiFi signal? Did you disable WiFi and tested it? Run the ipconfig /all command on the desktop, does it have the IP of the router you are using for the Gateway and DHCP? Does the desktop get an IP address?

I tested the laptop by totally disabling the WiFi connection, and ensured this was the case by trying to connect to the internet before plugging in the Ethernet cable. Before, I was unable to achieve any connection. After, I received a connection.

The DCHP and the Default Gateway have exactly the same IP address. I believe this is the one my router has. My Wireless network card has a similar IPV4 address to that of the LAN connection, but the last of the four parts of the address has a different number.

Try resetting the TCP/IP stack by running the "netsh int ip reset" command from a dos prompt, then reboot, see if that works. If it does not, maybe get an add-on network card and see if that works. You did not turn on security in the router by MAC address did you? Did you already try rebooting the router or even setting it to default settings again?

I ran the "netsh int ip reset" in DOS, still nothing. I don't have an add-on network card as of yet. I did not turn on security in the router by MAC address. I have rebooted the router, I cannot reset it to default settings due to it not being my router.

As a side note, as far as Windows is concerned, I have this ethernet connection in that I have the "Local Area connection" listed as a connection in "Network and Sharing Center" as well as the wireless connection. The LAN does not appear to work, though.
