It can vary quite a bit depending on the motherboard.
For example, I was able to find a few LGA 775 motherboards on PCPartPicker.com, all from Intel. Consider the differences between them, though:
-- The list of supported CPUs for the DQ45EK (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/boardsandkits/desktop-boards/DQ45EK.pdf), a Mini-ITX motherboad, includes 3 dual-core Xeon CPUs (Xeon 3065, 3075, & 3085).
-- In contrast, the DG41CN is a more capable motherboard, as it can handle double the DDR2 RAM. However, it does not support Xeon CPUs (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/boardsandkits/desktop-boards/DG41CN.pdf), even though it supports a faster Core 2 Quad (Q9650) than the DQ45EK board (Q9550S).
-- You also have the option of the DP35DPM mATX board, which is not only compatible with the same 3 dual-core Xeon CPUs as the DQ45EK & the Core 2 Quad of the DG41CN (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/boardsandkits/desktop-boards/DP35DP.pdf), but is also compatible with 5 quad-core Xeon CPUs (X3210, X3220, X3230, X3350 & X3360).
So, 3 different Socket LGA 775 motherboards, all of which can handle dual- or quad-core Core 2 CPUs, but only 2 of them will accept Xeon CPUs, & of those 2 only 1 can handle quad-core Xeons. This is why it's critical to know which motherboard you have.
