i7-7700k temperature spikes?

Hi, I recently got a i7-7700k and a msi z270 sli motherboard with a cpu cooler (thermaltake contac silent 12).

However, as I was checking for temperatures, I get around the mid 70s during gaming, and spikes to around 85. I don't know if I installed the cooler wrong, or the default voltage is high, but it would be great if I had a clue from where to start to lower the temp.

Also, because the temperature is so high, during those moments, my clock speed drops to around 3.5 ghz, which I heard was to compensate for the high heat.

Thank you so much! :D

There is some interesting info I found here, http://www.overclock.net/t/1621111/i7-7700k-temps-vs-ram-speed-on-z270-mainboard

From what I can tell from this thread. It seems that when XMP is used on MSI boards it may also raise a setting named PLL OC on MSI boards.

I found this setting on my ASUS z170, which was already at its lowest setting. I increased it and bam IBT stress test immediately sent CPU to 94C. Which previously had only been about 86c.

I don't know if this is your problem, but it may be worth looking into.
No. The cooler isn't the issue. i7-7700k owner here....it runs hot even at stock. What you are seeing is normal. If you want to improve temps you have 2 options:
1. get a 240mm AIO
2. delid it with a kit.

I had the same experience and delidded mine. Temps droped by 10-20C. It was worth it but it sucked I had to do that.

Mine never ran anything near even starting to get hot at stock speeds out of the box with the NH U12S.

Update BIOS to the latest vers and OC to 4.8.... at 1.284V... Got a NH D15 Cooler..... Never see anything approaching 70C in gaming, 50's and low 60's usually in gaming.

NO ISSUES out of the box.

that cooler is fine its has a 150w tdp so isnt the issue.
go into bios /eufi and load optomized defaults. (remember to check your drive load order and things like peg1 mode are set for the gpu.

what is your stock volts set to. if there higher than 1.2 try turning em down a bit (you might be able to get down to 1.18v.) the cpu should still run and still be stable at stock clocks. for every .10 you can drop you should loose at least 1c from the max temp. till you get to the low 70's on that cooler. which should stop you throttling.

Depends on what you want to do really.

If you are even thinking about over clocking stay far away from the budget coolers.

I don't believe in AIO's and NEVER will, get a good solid Air cooler IMO.

However do get the latest BOIS for your motherboard and update it.

Sounds good. Before buying something, I'll try to lower the voltage and see what happens. I remember seeing numbers around 1.3v on my hard ware monitor, which now seems to be too high. thanks guys

Update the BOIS before you do anything else.

The voltage will go to normal, should be around 1.212V at stock.

I have 2 intake and 3 outs (2 top, 1 back). Not the best fans, but have been doing their job well before

Sure thing, just checked the website, and nothing new. I'm running stock clock speed and getting these volts and temps.

I would get a better cooler...

Set the voltage to 1.212V... Or so....

Not sure what MSI is doing with their voltage regulation.

okay I tried 1.200v as vcore and ran prime 95. after like 3 mins a core fails (rounding was larger than expected), all my temps shoot up to 100 celcius and flatlines there. Any suggestions?

GET A BETTER COOLER AND IMPROVE CASE AIRFLOW

Seriously, if under volting and current cooler is mounted correctly and your cpu is still getting that hot. Then the next things to do are 1. ensure case airflow is good and 2. try a better cooler(a much better one). The 7700k runs hot and an entry level cooler is not going to cut it.

Having two top fans exhausting could be pulling any fresh cool air intake are providing straight past cpu cooler, worse if you have an open air cooled GPU then you could be sucking its heated exhaust into cpu cooler.

Did you read through the guide I posted?

What are your complete specs.

my current specs are: i7-7700k / msi z270 sli / thermaltake contac silent 12 CPU cooler / Asus GTX 1070 strix oc / deepcool kendomen mid tower case / EVGA 500 80+ PSU. I didn't read it yet

Okay, are you absolutely sure that the cpu cooler is mounted correctly.

You shouldn't be seeing a 100c on the world's crappiest cooler.

Just shot this, this is Rise Of The Tomb Raider at MAXIUM Settings at 1080P..
Look at the CPU temps, in OSD upper left..... This is at 4.8 GHz, i7 7700K as it came out of the box.

The 7700k temp spike issues is a frequently discussed one nowadays. Just check this if u can :
Monitor the clock speeds along with the vcore readings. Many ppl say 7700k takes upto 1.4v or above for turbo boosting. If that's the issue in ur case, limit the vcore to say 1.325v offset n see the Temps again. This should help.
