Hi everyone.
I've been reading for days and haven't found a conclusive answer yet. O have 1.5T of personal data (photos, videos, files) on am external hard drive.
I need to make a copy of it.

I can't work out whether it's going to be better to upload everything to cloud storage or clone the hard drive.

The factors I'm weighing up are:
Security and others accessing the photos, (my understanding is that your data isn't locked away privately in the cloud - Happy to have that explained to me)
Avoiding data loss - I don't want to risk compromising the data.
Simple and quick process for a tech novice with limited access to equipment and expertise.

Solution
1. You've indicated that all the data in which you're interested is currently residing on a "external hard drive". I assume you're referring to a USB external HDD, right?

2. Does that indicate that the data on that USBEHD is ALSO residing on an internally-connected drive in your PC? Or is the data on the USBEHD ONLY on that latter device?

3. Of course if that data is extremely critical or important to you there's certainly no objection to copying/cloning its contents to still a third drive. It could be a wise decision on your part.

4. As to whether you should undertake a copying or cloning operation it would really depend on the volume of data involved and how comfortable you would be undertaking a data-cloning operation. I assume...
More copies is always better.

Don't put all your eggs in the same basket - if your house burns down, having two HDDs in there isn't going to help.

Cloud storage can be pretty expensive, though, and if you're internet connection isn't fast then that much data will take forever.

I'd suggest just copying it onto a second HDD and asking a friend to hold onto it.

If it's only data, and no boot sectors, partitions, programs, etc. are involved, copying should be easier and most probably quicker.

If anything listed above is contained on that HDD, cloning seems like a more sensible choice.

I assume you're quite familiar with copying folders/files. While using a disk-cloning program is not unduly complicated many users - particularly inexperienced ones - sometimes find these programs somewhat difficult to utilize. Generally speaking, cloning would be the way to go if you're dealing with a multitude of files & folders. And since you're dealing with 1.5 TB worth of data it would appear cloning the contents of that drive would be feasible.

5. In any event since (apparently) you already have a USBEHD I would hope it's an enclosure that accommodates othe drives - HDDs and/or SSD's so that all you would need is another HDD or SSD to insert in the enclosure. (It's one of the chief reasons we encourage PC users to purchase that type of USB external enclosure rather than the "one-piece" commercial units. You gain superior flexibility by doing so as well as other advantages.)
