ASUS z270-p M.2 not recognized

Hi,

I am doing my first build on ASUS z270-p and it has 2 M.2 slots, where I would like to plug in my GTX1060 cards. On one of the slots card is running with no issues, but other one seems not to be recognized. GPU is working on other PCI slots.

In bios I don't see M.2_2 option. Does anybody know how to solve this?

both m.2 slots support sata and pcie m.2 drives. only difference is m.2_2 supports drive up to 110 mm in lenth. (saw a post at asus forum, a reply by Chino

Chino suggested installing the GPU into PCIe 3.0 x16/x8_1 slot for maximum performance.

Not the same board there @gosubuilder? The length difference doesn't apply to this board.
M.2_1 has it's own PCH configuration in the BIOS, but not M.2_2. I would suspect (although the manual doesn't make this clear) that the only way to have a chance to run would be to use the same type of M.2 (ie PCIe or SATA), or use the "auto detect" functionality.

FWIW, with M2_1 being linked with the SATA1 port..... if you're using a SATA drive, try populating M.2_1 with it, and M.2_2 with the PCIe (assuming you're not running 2x SATA or 2x PCIe of course).

The ASUS manual (and almost ever other board/manufacturer) would also recommend PCIE 3.0 x16_1 for a single GPU.

Again OP, which M.2 drives are you using?

I would start from the beginning - remove all your GPUs (unless you have no onboard GPU, in which case, leave one installed in the x16_1 slot. Do the M.2 drives get detected in the BIOS? If so, start adding back GPUs until they don't.

It's likely a bandwidth issue. The board/chipset etc is likely configured/wired for the M.2's due to the lack of SLI support. Populating with mulitple GPUs is utilizing the available bandwidth, leaving nothing for the M.2's (would be my guess).

Thanks for very detailed information and explanation!

I did replug SSD in SATA2 port and I am using 2 PCI (2 GPUs).

About drives - whatever came with windows, I can't find anything specific on internet so maybe you could point me to correct direction where I can start digging.

I disconnected everything and put back one-by-one, but no luck (not plugging M.2s in last).

Ebay ones - "M.2 to PCI-E NGFF Key PCI-E 4 X Extender" (as example: http://www.ebay. com/itm/M-2-to-PCI-E-NGFF-Key-PCI-E-4-X-Extender-Converter-Adapter-Card-for-PC-Laptop-/401364074097?hash=item5d7329be71:g:8H8AAOSwpINZZPnG).

As item they are working, just not in that slot

Wow, I totally misunderstood. You want to utilize your M.2 slots as additional PCIe slots for your GPU.

What all do you have installed? While for mining, x4 is fine, and I think x4 is the minimum you can run a GPU from these days.... but you might still be able to do x1..... There's a limited number of lanes available from the CPU and Chipset.... and I suspect you're maxing them out.

Sorry if I wasn't clear before.

Mobo: Asus z270-p
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.8ghz
RAM: DDR4 4GB
GPU: 8x gtx1060 6GB
SSD: 120 GB

2 M.2 extenders

In BIOS I have set everything to x1 and 7 out of 8 cards are working as they should and generating acceptable hashrates. If I switch the cards, I see that none of them or risers are faulty, it's just that one M.2 that seems not to work.

When I turn on PC, all 8 GPU fand do a small twitch so I know that some electricity is delivered to them.

I've asked for some other opinions, as I have a suspicion, but may be way off target.

I suspect you've maxed out the PCIe lanes available. With 7x (at least) x4 and potential for the card in x16_1 to be running at either x8 or x16 (although should be handled by the CPU directly), the max 24 (or 30) lanes and the fact additional aspects like USB run from the chipset..... I just don't think there's anything left for the 8th card.

I don't think this is the case as this guy (https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=NtxMhBWcxW0) is running the same thig only with AMD cards.

I cheched my device manager, I am using devices on BUS 1 to BUS 3 and then Bus 5 to BUS 8, but BUS 4 seems to be missing

Did you find any solution to this?
I'm facing the exact same problem!

Got 7 GPUs running, but the 8th card won't work in the m.2_2 slot.
Also tried other risers and m.2 to pcie cards.

Hi
i have working mining rig. z270-p with 8 gpu. all works.
Now i start building second rig with almost same parts and m2 not work. Only different is cpu.
working rig cpu is i3 and not working rig cpu is cheap Pentium 4400. Maybe different bios is also problem.
working rig bios is 0608 and not working rig bios is newer 0812.
Damn problems...

I'm having the exact same problem as described in this thread. I have tried EVERYTHING. Risers are fine, power is fine, card is fine... it just wont recognize the M.2_2 card.

I also have the G4400 Pentium processor that you just described, and I'm wondering if that's it. I don't think its software related or bios related either, I can get ethOS to boot.

Should I try a new CPU? Anyone have this working yet?

Fully working with 8 Nvidia GPUs (1080 ti or 1060) on Bios ver 1002 with G4400 Processor. Working with Older green m.2 risers and new white w/led m.2 risers. Works using both 006C and 008S pcie risers plugged into either version of the m.2 risers.

My sata drive is plugged into SATA6G_2(Gray)

After flashing to 1002 with default settings I changed only the following BIOS settings:
PEG - ASPM --> Auto
Above 4G Decoding --> Enabled
Primary Display --> PCIE
DMI Max Link Speed --> Gen3
PCIEX15_1 Link Speed --> Gen3
PCIe Speed --> Gen3
SATA6G_1(Gray) --> Disabled
SATA6G_3(Gray) --> Disabled
SATA6G_4(Gray) --> Disabled
Restore AC Power Loss --> Last State

Notes:
Lower m.2 connector worked with Primary Display as CPU (onboard graphics) when it is the only thing plugged in. upper m.2 did not work with onboard graphics as primary. After disabling onboard graphics all pcie ports worked with nvidia cards plugged in. added 1 at a time the first 3(m.2, m.2, primary 16x slot), then popped in the next 5. had to reinstall the video driver after switching the bios settings. Then had to be patient for drivers to auto install when adding more cards.

***PC won't boot if 4G is disabled and there are more than 2 or 3 cards plugged in.

I'm running 1002 as well with 4400. The last card just twitches... my move is either try a G3900 or just downgrade bios to an older version? which should I try first? BIOS?

Got it figured out and updated my last post with the following:
