Worth Upgrading to an i7-4790k or Ryzen?

I'm looking to buy a new CPU to reduce the bottleneck my system has on my GTX 1080. I'm currently running an i5-4590 on a Z97 motherboard. I'm wondering would upgrading to an i7-4790k be worth it, since it's already 3 years old, or should I just buy a Ryzen? Only doing gaming @ 1440p 144hz currently but I might dabble in video recording etc.

Then like I said originally, you will be fine for a few more years with a 4790K upgrade. I'd get a CPU cooler as well and crank up with an overclock to keep it closer to the newer series Intel CPUs in performance. Let that K-series stretch its legs a little.

For higher fps you'd be better off with the i7 and since you have a z series board already you can overclock it with a decent cooler. Ryzen ipc has improved but it's only caught up to around haswell levels despite being released 3yrs after haswell. Most ryzen cpu's seem to be hitting a wall around 4ghz, the i7 should easily reach 4.6ghz or higher. It will also be less expensive than buying a ryzen, new motherboard, ddr4 ram (ram prices aren't the greatest at the moment) and reinstalling windows.

I7's are also respectable when it comes to video editing. If you did mostly video editing and only dabbled in games then one of the ryzen 6 or 8 core cpu's might have been a better option.

Well you have another option too. Wait for Coffee Lake's 8th generation CPUs (Core i7 8xxx, Z370 motherboard). They are supposed to start being released this November. This is why I'm holding out upgrading my i5 4690K build top better utilize my 1080Ti. However, if you are really held back on that i5 4690 for your GTX 1080, then find a good deal on Haswell i7 4790K.

Keep in mind that they are no longer sold new (from North American retailers anyway). You can find sellers on eBay selling them new in box however. The best deal I could find on a new one is $300:

That would give you 2-3 more years use out of your rig which IMO wouldn't be bad at all. Then you could take advantage of whatever the new tech is in 2020 or whatever. Also, you don't say how much RAM you have, but if you are still running on 8GB, you'd be wise to go ahead and sell that then upgrade to a 16 GB kit. Newer AAA games are recommending 16GB these days.

To clarify, I'm not in NA, I'm actually in the EU. Ireland to be specific. And 10tacles I would preferably like to refrain on spending too much money, since I've spent over €1000 already on buying a monitor and GTX 1080. I assume the new Coffee Lake would cost atleast €600 for a mid-end CPU/MOBO/RAM combo, which is over what I'd like to spend.

I also have another question. Since I'm in the EU, would I be charged Import taxes/Customs if I bought from American websites such as Newegg? I'm only asking because Newegg has a global section at https://www.newegg.com/global/ie/?nm_mc=KNC-GoogleIEAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleIEAdwords-_-BrandingExact-_-Newegg-_-Global&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhrzLBRC3ARIsAPmhsnVtYsNfHnIcV7syRhvE8N1WWZdnXWnI-WwPy3MrSB77lvQu_FYi7MsaAvsXEALw_wcB.

NewEgg has global websites but they do not have global warehouses. They still ship from the US, so you'd be dealing with import/VAT/customs like anything else from the US. (This in my opinion is a missed market opportunity for NewEgg - not having one or two distribution centers that serve the UK and mainland European nations). But I do not see a 4790K for sale on NewEgg's global website - all I see are Haswell i5 chips left.
