Hi,

First of all I'm not sure if USB type C is the same as Thunderbolt 3 type C. I'm sure that I need TB3 though.

Next, can I add a PCIE that has TB3 to my Z97 MB or are they not compatible? Been digging through the internet but didn't find a clear answer.

Hope someone here can help :)

Best Regards

USB 3.1 Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 use the same physical port but they are not the same thing. Thunderbolt 3 has 4x the speed of USB 3.1.

Since the ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER doesn't have a Thunderbolt header, I would think that Thunderbolt 3 is out of the question.

I'm not as computer smart as some people out there, and I'm not sure this will help, but I will try. Usb type C can support Thunderbolt 3, but on your board, I wouldn't be able to tell. For that you can most likely find that out on the Z97 MB original website. And, if it does support thunderbolt 3, don't go off my word completely, but a PCI-E slot that does support Thunderbolt 3.0 should work on a motherboard that supports Thunderbolt 3.0 as well, it may not work quite as fast however.
You should most definitely find another person to correct me if I am wrong, because I don't know as much as I should.
