Hey guys,

I have been having this issue since I built my pc a few months back and decided now is the time to find a solution. Essentially, my Verizon internet plan provides me with 50 mb/s up and down, however, my computer has never been able to use it to its potential. To date, the highest I have seen it go is 2mb/s. I rarely even get that speed however, and on a good day I MIGHT see 1mb/s download. My first attempt to solve this was by running a speed test, which came back normal a few months back. However, today when I tested it, the max speed it hits is 2.4 mb/s down and 20mb/s up. I assume it was my wireless wifi adapter, so I brought my computer out to the router and hooked up and ethernet. This accomplished nothing. I was still getting the same lousy speeds. Although my guess would be that it is an issue with the connection itself, none of my family seem to be having the same issue. Just me.

Any recommendations on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Downloading any file over 100 mb is become a very tedious and time consuming task. Thank you!

Solution
If you have 2 computers, you could try transferring files between them to see if that transfer speed is also slow.

It should be easy to compare the speed between 2 megabits and even wireless-g getting 54 megabits.

But even if you found out that the router part of the device was working and the modem was bad you still wouldn't be able to do anything without replacing the whole device.

With an all-in-one modem / router you may need to call your ISP to come and look at the issue.
1. Make sure your ethernet drivers are up to date and all devices on latest firmware.

2. Turn all connected devices off for 5 minutes. The start them in order staring with the device which 1st receives the signal (modem), then router, and do so on. Wait a minute or so between each start up. If no improvement, start direct connect to modem and move down the line.

3. If that doesn't do anything,m contact your ISP and they will walk you thru a trouble shooting procedure. If that doesn't solve anything they will send a tech out.

Disconnect the router and plug straight into the modem with the ethernet cable.

It's possible the router is failing / configured wrong.

If you get a much faster speed plugged directly into the modem then we can investigate possible problems with the router.

he already did

Connecting it to the router is not the same as connecting it to the modem.

Our goal is to narrow down the issue by removing the router and seeing if the problem clears up or if the issues lies with the modem/ISP or the computer.

I have had routers break where they would randomly drop connections and or have severely limited speeds, even on ethernet.

But that's the entire point of testing the setup without the router.

If the computer's connection becomes superfast when plugged in directly into the modem through Ethernet then the issue must lie in either the router or the wifi of the computer.

Doesn't take long to test.

And to be fair Wireless-AC scales to much higher speeds than gigabit, so we can't truthfully say gigabit Ethernet crushes wireless speeds all the time.

Sorry for the late reply. My setup contains the router and modem in the same box so all Ethernet connections come from the same place. Any other ideas?
