Upgarded Graphics Card. LOWER FPS

As of 7/2017 I upgraded my graphics card from an EVGA 550 TI to an MSI Geforce GTX 970. Ive noticed my FPS playing WoW on ultra ins't what it should be. I am running lower FPS now about 22-24 FPS in New Dalaran...

My drivers as far as I know are up to date.. Driver Version 384.76...

As far as the rest of my PC I have:

4x2gb ram sticks. Plus the 3.5 from the GPU.
AMD Phenom II x4 965 processor

I've already totally uninstalled NVIDIA and everything attached to it and reinstalled. Problem still persists.

Maybe there is not enough power available to run the newer GPU. What is your wattage and rating (bronze silver etc...) on your PSU. Better yet, send a link to the PSU that you have. That's all I could think of that could be causing it.

Before I was getting low 30's... So I switched to using just halfway graphics. Which I was getting between 45-80 FPS FPS.So I was waiting until I got my new GPU in to play on Ultra again.

It's also important to note that I put the new GPU to that same half way graphics and saw it at about 32.

PSUs either deliver enough power to run a GPU or they don't and they shut down due to tripping their voltage/current/power/thermal cut-offs. There shouldn't be any difference in performance.

That said, Diablotek is mainly known for poor to horrible system-destroying quality PSUs, so I'd recommend switching to a better quality PSU like a 520W Seasonic S12-II.

I will say this.. My HDD is fucking shit and I am saving for a 1 TB SSD. I have an 7 year old Segate 1TB HDD with 7200 RPM. Its the only piece of hardware I need updated. But that shouldn't be messing with my FPS. Just throwing it outt here. My newer HDD shit the bed randomly so had to pull my old computers out.

I inherited this PC through a friend who has been sent back to his own country. He just built the PC about 6 months ago. Although I do believe the HDD went for other reasons than the PSU. I read up on what you said and I will be replacing it. But unfortunately I don't think this solves the problem as the 550 ti ran the game better.

Correct, it shouldn't make any difference performance-wise.

For the GPU, check CPU and GPU temperatures to see if thermal throttling may be affecting either component - maybe you knocked the CPU's HSF while swapping the GPU out and broke the thermal paste. If both check out fine, try removing and re-installing the drivers.

So I used MSI Afterburner for the GPU Temp, Hasnt gone over 55C with WoW and Diablo on Ultra. Don't have anything to figure out the CPU temp however.

The only WoW setting I can think of which would have a meaningful impact on CPU load would be draw distance since it increases the radius within which the CPU needs to setup geometry for the GPU. On my i5-3470, I can only crank draw distance to 6 before I start seeing significant stutter while flying around and I know it isn't my GTX1050 since it is sitting around 40% when that happens and WoW only uses ~1.2GB of VRAM on it.

Since OP is attempting to run Ultra, I'm guessing that bumped draw distance up a few notches over whatever he was using with his 550 and that is making his Phenom miserable.

As of right now I've used a DDU and am trying that first. Currently re downloading the up to date drivers and hoping for an easy fix. I've downloaded Rivaturner and that's my next step if this doesn't work. I've also located the drivers for my motherboard and I'm going to double check and make sure that's up to date as well. Will keep everyone posted.

So that didn't work. As of right now I'm in game while MSI afterburner and Core temp. Wow on Ultra and the GPU is about 50-60x and the CPU is reading 40-43c.

My afterburner is set at 100% power limit %
Temp Limit is 79c
Core clock (MHz) set at +0 and
Memory Clock (MHz) 0

From what I understand it's shower 134 GPU clock and 324 memory clock.

But CPU and GPU running cool. I have an thermaltake tower with Additional fans pushing air.

What is your draw distance set at? On my i5-3470 which is a fair bit faster than your Phenom, 7 is the highest that I consider acceptable on Tuesday nights. Try lowering the draw distance one step at a time and see how much of a difference that makes on frame rates. If it makes no difference, then the problem is elsewhere. If it makes a significant difference, then your CPU is simply not powerful enough to handle that much extra environment detail regardless of how much powerful the GPU might be.

I have my view distance at 10. However even when I was using the level 5 midway graphics I boosted my distance to 10. I always keep view distance at 10. All I'm saying is with a much beefier card I'm rolling with the same if not worse FPS when I had it on ultra to try it with the old 550 ti. I feel like I'm missing something, all I can say is I notice a difference in how the battle.bet app looks once I put the new card in.

You know the side that shows all the games. OW, Wow, diablo, all the that. Those icons look much different than they did before. It seems like something so weird to say but when you see it every day with the other card and it changed with the new one you notice.

I wonder what else could be the problem.

As of now I've uninstalled and reinstalled old and new drivers manually.

Used a DDU for the drivers.

Core temp and Afterburner are getting good readings temp wise.

Is there any weird PC setting I should look into?

Tested that in Dalaran just now. With Settings on Ultra/High and View Distance a 1 I get 30-34. With View distance at I get 20-23.

Am I wrong for thinking that shouldn't be the case?

You skipped the view distance on that second number. If you meant 1 and 10 respectively, lower FPS at higher view distance is expected. Your numbers are lower than mine mainly because your X4 is a fair bit slower than my i5 and draw distance is heavy on system CPU and memory performance.

100% I would expect the FPS to go up with view distance down. That's a given. I am now wondering if I was just silly to think I would be able to run it better than that. Feels to me like my old card handled 10 just about the same if not better.
