I have a 5y/o desktop I use for gaming and to watch movies with the following configuration:

I have been very intrigued for a while by 21:9 34" curved screens so I picked up on sale this week a BenQ XR3501. The monitor itself seems to work fine (apart from a couple dead pixels) and the 1080 is ok for games.
Now to the problem, (I hope I am able to explain properly); the performance I am seeing is worse than I was expecting for the display: I am having some stuttering problems in games and movies and with the UFO test at 144hz/144 FPS or even at lower refresh rates is giving me a bit of a trail (https://www.testufo.com/).
What is worse, in movies, even with slow moving objects or when the camera rotates (say a space ship in Star Wars) you can detect small jumps in the image, and it is not fluid; also the image quality ain´t that impressive. In games, for example Deus Ex HR, the image is neater than my 24" 60hz but it is choppy and blurry when looking around fast (something I had not noticed in my old Samsung)
Based on previous research the XR3501 should be fine for what I use it, and I don`t think the 1080 is a problem for gaming/movies, also the 144hz should help with the lack of G/F sync (please correct me if I am wrong in any of the statements...); so my conclusion was "you need to change that 770 for at least a 1060, preferably a 1070".
I was checking the Acer X34, as a better alternative to the BenQ, but as much as I would love that one (1440p, G-sync, etc) here the Acer is more than 1200 € compared to less than 500€ I paid for the BenQ; the difference is too much just to play a few hours a week and watch some movies (also I have the feeling that if I had gotten the Acer I would have had similar problems)
So I would love if you can give me some advice to see if dropping another 400€ to get a 1070 will fix the problems (or if a 1060 for 300€ is worth it) and also if there is other components creating a bottleneck (CPU? would OC to 3,8 help? should I add more RAM?), or if you think there is something wrong with the monitor and I should just return it and stick to my old Samsung...
Also if there is any recommendations in the settings of the monitor for my current build that you can give me (recommended refresh rate, AMA, etc), and the proper settings for a build with a 1070 (if they are different)
