I just bought a HyperX Cloud Core headset but I cannot get it to work properly.

If I connect it to the back of my PC (sound card or motherboard) I get headphone sound, but no mic.

If I connect it to the front of my PC the microphone works, but the headphones don't.

I even tried connecting the mic to the front and the headphone jack to a FiiO 11 mont blanc amp, which is connected to the audio input in the soundcard, and only got a lot of static, but still no headphone sound.

Can someone please help? I need this fixed before 10pm EST tonight for job training!

My system:
i5-4670 3.4GHz
Xonar DGX sound card
AS ROCK Z87 Extreme3
16GB RAM
GTX 1070
Windows 7 Ultimate
500GB HDD (partitioned, only ~250GB usable in Windows)

Solution
OK, that extension cable should solve any questions about connections.

Now, source of sound. You have more than one hardware device that can output sound. Windows can only use ONE device at a time, and you have to tell it what you want to use. Click at lower left and go through Control Panel to Sounds. Find the tab that lists the various sound output devices available, and choose the one you want to use. Tell it to use that as the Windows Default Sound Playback device. (There also are similar choices available for the default Recording device (mic) and Midi playback device, and you want to set those.) Back out of there and plug your headset into the appropriate jacks on the machine.

For now, I suggest you don't need the Mixamp Pro...

The connector on the end of the headset cord is NOT the same as a common connector for many audio cords. If you look closely, it has four separate sections - a tip, two rings, and then a sleeve furthest from the tip. A "standard" stereo connector has only ONE sleeve contact. This headset needs three contacts for the two ears and one mic, plus a common Ground. So if you just plug that into any common "stereo" jack, the connections are wrong.

That is why the headset comes with a "control box" that has one jack for the headset cable to plug into, and two cords with typical 3-contact (tip / ring / sleeve) connectors to plug into two jacks on your computer. You MUST use that box to get the connections done right. Are you using it?

The headset came with a sort of Y-adaptor cable which divides the shorter, 3 black ring plug/cable into what appears to be a standard 2-ring (green) headphone plug and a standard (pinkish) 2-ring mic plug. This dual cable extension is what I've been using.

I also have a Mixamp Pro, if that could help in any way.

Okay, I believe I have it working. Got both headphone sound, mic pickup, and a successful recording when plugged into the motherboard and Recording set to Realtek HD Audio and Playback to Speakers > Realtek HD Audio.

Only weirdness left is when I try and use Windows Microphone setup, I get nothing (it is stuck on Xonar, that's probably why) and it says the mic is not reording anything.

However, using Windows recorder, I get a clear mic recording which I can listen back to.
