Hi. Thinking of replacing my i7 3930k for a Xeon E5 2690 (v1!) in my video editing rig.
The 3930K is 6 core @ 3.2ghz then Xeon is 8 core @ 2.9 ghz, both with hyper threading.
This is the highest cpu upgrade I know of that I can make in my Alienware R4 (07JNH0, X79, LGA 2011 motherboard).
Anyone know if it is worth while upgrading cpu and if my motherboard will run ok with the Xeon (A07 bios).
Anyone using a Xeon 2690? Anyother cpu recomendations?
Thanks.

Honestly I would stick with the i7 3930K and give it an OC to 4.2+ghz. OC's like that it should still outperform the xeon do to it's low clock speed. Also from my understanding even if your board will accept a Xeon it has to be a V2 so that one still won't work.

Also the best CPU I see supported is the i7 4960x which has the same number of threads but a higher clock speed a generation newer with better binning (more OC potential, maybe...silicon lottery and then there is the TIM issue). Down side is it uses TIM instead of soldering the chip to the heat spreader so it may not stay as cool and thus may not OC as well.

Thanks atomicWAR.
Unfortunately I can't overclock on my motherboard, apparently overclocking can only be done through a Dell engineer. Dell charge £100 for overclocking!
I have been considering the 4960X and I think I might just go with that... shame I can't overclock it though.
I'm just wanting to squeeze the most out of my X79 rig (i73930K, 32 gb ram, gtx 690, evo 850 250GB ssd, Crucial mx3000 750 ssd, 2x 1tb hard drives).
I didn't know I would need the v2 either, so thanks for that info.

Used an unlocked, 6 core, e5-1650 v1 for sometime @ 4.4-4.5 ghz ... YES you can overclock using the aurora r4, A11 bios. Was able to push up to 4.6-4.7 ghz, at vcore 1.4, but could not sustain it as temps would surpass 82 Celsius at full load even using a scythe ninja 4 with 2 fans; however at 4.4-4.5 ghz temps would peak at 77-78 Celsius.

I am presently using an E5-2690 v1 which turbo boosts to 3.2-3.3 ghz with all 8 cores at full load. The cinebench R15 score for the e5-2690 is about 1150-60 while the 1650 @4.5ghz would score similarly. In video editing, using vegas14 .... the 8-core has a slight edge of about 10-15 seconds rendering to 1080p using the same 500mb file.

All-in-all, the 6-core e5-1650 overclocked to 4.4-4.5 ghz performs similarly to an 8-core E5-2690@ 3.2-3.3 ghz in video editing. HOWEVER, the E5-2690 never exceeds 60 celsius using only about 1.22 volts vs. an e5-1650 at 77-78 celsius at almost 1.4 volts.
