Failing hard drive?

My laptops hard drive stopped working after 2 years. Can i buy an external harddrive and just use that?

You need to replace the internal drive.
Which will obviously entail a whole reinstall of the OS and everything else.

Did you have any of this data backed up?

No, most PC's won't boot and run off an external drive, nor would the speed be fast enough unless it was USB 3.0, but still not the best idea. Just replace the internal drive.

the internal one must be replaced, no workarounds here will give you a good solution
