CPU temperature reads at maximum in BIOS

My "server" has been running very noisily for months now due to the CPU fan. Technically it's running as a 24/7 server but its load is very low. I bought a replacement heatsink/fan which didn't fit as there's no space for retention brackets on the motherboard so I cleaned out the present stock Intel one, cleaned off and replaced the thermal paste and had a look in the BIOS. I should have done this first. BIOS is reading the CPU temperature as 256 degrees Fahrenheit from the moment it is turned on so the fan is always at full speed.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5P800. The processor is a Pentium 4 (2.66).

I'm assuming this is a sensor fault but don't know how to check that or what to do about it if it is.

Any suggestions to restore peace to my office and to my mind?

Since the system keeps on running, then the motherboard probably is defective. Personally I wouldn't bother replacing it; you can buy a better system for very little money.
