Hey, whats up?

I'm planning to switch from my old 2010 GTS 450 to a more suitable card but my friend says that he is willing to trade his GTX 970 for my new bought GTX 1050. I was wondering if the GTX 1050's extra 0.3ghz would really help out in gaming considering the GTX 970's extra 2GB of vram

Solution
The GTX 970, despite being older, is waaay more powerful than your GTX 1050: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1050/2577vs3650. Such GTX 970 sits somewhere in the neighborhood of an RX 570 and a GTX 1060.

I'd just be concerned why he is willing to trade such powerful 970 for a much less powerful 1050... ?

Well like the other person said, why is he wanting to trade on a downgrade? I hope he's a REAL good friend and there's nothing wrong with that 970. A 970 is on average about 40% faster than a 1050, and 33% faster than a 1050Ti among today's games within the past few years.
