Hi

I have an old computer with the following motherboard:

super micro Model: X7SBA

Can I use this as a NAS and add WD Red drives? I have never built one before but thought I'd have a go.

TIA

From the user manual:
https://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/3210/MNL-0976.pdf

You need ECC RAM.
"Four DIMM slots support Dual/Single Channel DDR2 800/667 MHz up to 8 GB
of ECC Unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM"

Like this:

Assuming the rest of the system works, sure.

OK thanks. I've read that Raid 6 is best to use so was thinking of getting 4 HDDs (not sure what size)is this a good idea or is it overkill? I want to just use it to back up all my photos and genealogy information.

Size depends on your needs.
WD Red or Seagate IronWolf are dedicated NAS drives.

Besides the motherboard, do you have the rest of the working system?

It seems to be all there, it's got 2 x 1gb Corsair CM2X1024-6400 ram but was hoping to upgrade it if possible? I've seen some on ebay. Another question if that's ok is would I be able to use Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 with the CM2X1024-6400 or do I need to keep to the same model?

Mixing RAM is always a crapshoot.
Better to get a matched set of new RAM sticks.

OK thanks.

Another silly question, would i be better to look at replacing these with 4 x 2gb (something like this 8GB Memory Corsair (4x2GB DDR2 xtreme 2Rx8 PC2-6400U 800MHz 240pin) For PC ?

Does is matter what the numbers are ie:

PC2-6400 DDR2 CM2X2048-6400C5,
CM2X2048-8500C5C,
CM2X1024-8500C5 PC2-8500 DDR2-1066 1066 MHz

What is the better type?
