Upgrading my CPU

My system build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/pscNhq

I have everything already built in the system above, except I have an Intel Core i5 6500 and the default CPU cooler.

I was planning on upgrading to the Intel Core i7 7700K as shown above, but you may notice that this seems to cause an error, however there are a couple things I am confused about:
  • It's a website so it could easily be wrong/inaccurate and I'm worrying for nothing.
  • The Intel Core i7 6700K works, which confuses me since they are more or less exactly the same.
  • How would you update BIOS as said in the error message?

Please someone help, basically: will the Intel Core i7 7700K work with my system or not?
I don't know how to go about updating BIOS like it says, and I especially don't want to buy a £300+ CPU to find out it doesn't work.

And if the 7700K doesn't work, I can easily go for the 6700K which seemingly has no errors and is cheaper but less powerful.

You will need the BIOS update to support 7th gen CPU's like the 7700k. For this you will need to read the motherboard manual, you will need to do this while using your 6500.

You realise the k CPU is for overclocking but your motherboard is not? The only benefit of the 7700k versus the 7700 is the slightly higher stock speed due to your motherboard.

in all aspects the 7700k is exactly the same as the 6700k, after seeing the coutless amount of tests and benchmarks, there isnt even a one second or one fps difference! They are exactly the same and there are times where the 6700k performs better! the 7700k was a rushed and desperate attempt to get sales. so just go with the 6700k because the new 7700k seems to just be an advertising scheme for people to buy more intel cpu's, dont fall into that category.

stick with 6700K, as previously stated, the value per upgrade power your getting is minimal

Okay, I will just go with the 6700K, but will I still have to update my BIOS for it? Because I have no idea how to go about doing that and I'm not seeing anything helpful in the motherboard manual :/

Okay, thank you for the help! :)

I'd say it comes dome to price. The 7700k has a 12.5% higher boost speed and a 23.5% higher base speed than the 6700. The reason most games perform the same is in most benchmarks is the gpu is the limiting factor before a modern i7 limits fps. As you cannot overclock the % above are the extra performance you will have available as both CPU's have the same IPC. Ok games generally don't need the extra performance but what about in 1/2/3 years time?

If they were similar cost I would think it mad to buy the weaker CPU, updating the BIOS is easy, just read through the instructions first and then follow step by step. Now if there is a good saving to be had with the 6700 then its your choice if you spend the extra knowing any benefit will not be realised now but might be in the future. Whatever you pick they are all excellent CPU's.
