Hi
First post- be gentle :)

I currently have 4 slots of DDR3 ram, each with 2gb installed, so a total of 8GB
If I want to achieve 16gb, what would you recommend the most cost efficient way of doing this, while using some of the 2gb sticks I already have?
I though about keeping 2 sticks install and buying 12gb for the other 2 slots, but that configuration doesn't seem to be available.

There are only two ways to get 16GB. Two 8GB DIMMs or four 4GB DIMMs. That is the only two ways. Two 8GB DIMMs is probably cheaper. Your 2GB DIMMs might get a few $$$ on E-Bay or you might just have to put them in the junk drawer.

You didn't state the motherboard. First check the motherboard manual. Does the mobo support 16GB? Does it require a specific configuration, i.e. 4X4GB?

Depending on the mobo you might cripple the system if you use your 2GB modules with the new modules. Sixteen minus four GB = 12 GB. You're not going to find 12 or 6 GB modules. Pitch the 2GB modules.
