Computer Unexpected Shutdown While Gaming

Hi,

Recently my computer has started shutting down unexpectedly while playing GTA V... it was fine up until a couple of weeks ago but now I can't really play the game since the PC shuts down all the time. When it does run, it runs smoothly and works well on reasonably high settings. I checked the error log and it says event ID 41 whatever that means! Any advice would be appreciated although I have been advised by a friend that it could be a CPU overheating issue... but not being an expert I'd just like to get a few more opinions so I can decide what to do! My specs are as follows:

NVIDIA GTX 680
Intel Core i7-3770K
16GB RAM
Windows 10
Gigabyte motherboard (the precise model has not been filled by the OEM apparently)

Thanks
Thomas

Temperatures are easy to check, just download HWInfo or a similar system monitoring utility and keep an eye on CPU/GPU temperature. If it were a HSF attachment or paste issue causing the CPU or GPU to overheat, you would be complaining about severely degraded performance as the CPU/GPU is thermal-throttling itself to avoid self-destruction by over-heating.

Since you can "smoothly" play for a while some of the time and get much faster reboots at other times instead of sluggish performance at some point within the game followed by a crash or reboot, that sounds more like a PSU issue to me.

Thanks for your reply, I will install the temperature monitoring software as you suggested although as you said, the performance is great everywhere else so this may not be the issue. In fact I can be back in the game within 1 or 2 minutes of the emergency shutdown. The PSU I have is the Corsair CX750 which I think should be perfectly adequate for its purpose so do you think the PSU could have developed a fault?

Thanks!

P.s. just in case this is somewhat useful!

How hot is the room the PC is in? The CX750 requires intake temperature below 40C to operate normally. It seems dusty in there, may want to check that the PSU isn't clogged with dust - I've had a PSU randomly cause my PC to reboot from overheating a few years ago because I forgot to clean its filter for a little too long.

Thanks again for your support, I will give the PSU a bit of a clean and monitor it over a week or so to test this solution!! The room is not particularly hot, the PC is the only thing in the room that generates heat and the issues all started after the heatwave a few weeks ago during which the PC behaved fine!

Thanks

UPDATE: So I tested the CPU temperature and found that while idle it was running at around 40-50 Celsius! While playing GTA this temperature rose to 88 Celsius after just 5 minutes! I have therefore decided to replace the CPU cooler with a Hyper 212 Evo since it wasn't particularly expensive. I will update this thread as to weather this solves the problem!

Thanks again!
