I can't get to BIOS, but I get one short beep on my ASUS mobo, which sounds like I'm getting through POST. This is a computer that worked fine for almost 3 years and now cannot get to BIOS. I only see a black screen.
This computer worked right for almost three years, and one morning (about a month ago) after a bunch of win7 updates would not boot. I was not the last one to use it before it wouldn't boot.
When I was first troubleshooting, I had brief luck with only one of the RAM sticks installed, where I was able to get to windows. Foolishly, I thought I had diagnosed the other RAM as bad, and proceeded to try other slots with the "good" stick. None of the other slots worked, and when I tried the original configuration that got me to windows, I could not longer get it to work again.
Specs:
Mobo: ASUS H97M-PLUS LGA 1150
CPU: i3-4150
RAM: 2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
PSU: Corsair CX500 500W
SSD: 840 EVO 120GB
HDD: WD Black 1TB 7200rpm
-DVD drive
-stock CPU cooler
-win7
I have been through several troubleshooting guides, including the Tom's Hardware guide for troubleshooting display issues.
1. I moved the RAM around: no luck
2. I have cleared the CMOS: no luck. (have let computer sit overnight without battery and with jumper moved).
3. I have reseated everything except the CPU and its cooler.
4. I have checked the PSU voltages: all good.
5. I have tried RAM from my good computer: no luck.
When I pull all RAM, I get multiple beeps from the mobo, indicating RAM issue, as expected.
6. I have tried a GPU (family PC usually just uses onboard graphics): no luck.
7. Currently I have the computer breadboarded on a table, with only the PSU, CPU, one RAM stick, and the monitor connected. I continue to hear one beep from the board.
8. Forgot to mention that I have already tried a known working monitor and cable: no luck.
I think my next step is to order a new mobo. I don't think it is worth trying to warranty a 3 year old board that is discontinued since I'd have to pay shipping to ASUS. What is killing me is that I get the POST beep. In my mind, that means I should be able to get to BIOS. Guess not.
I'm out of ideas, except I am going to grab a new battery for CMOS at the store, just in case something is somehow wrong there.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
