Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a new PC with the hopes of putting some of my old hardware in it to help beef it up even further.

However, after purchasing, I realized that none of my existing hardware is compatible, so I need some help making some decisions:

■Should I keep my new PC?
■If not, what upgrades should I get?

My original PC (the one I'm using now) is an HP Pavilion P7-1235.

Specs: Official Specs Doc HERE
AMD A8 5500 with integrated Radeon HD Graphics (Integrated graphics not being utilized)
8GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB HDD
Cooler Master CM12V
Antec 520M High Current Gamer PSU
MSI GTX 960 2G
DVD-RW
Wifi-Enabled
Standard ATX form factor
Came with Windows 7, upgraded to Windows 10.

New PC is an HP Pavilion 510-p109

Specs: Official Specs Doc HERE
AMD A12-9800 with integrated Radeon R7 graphics
16 GB DDR4 RAM
180 W uATX aPFC internal power supply
2TB HDD
DVD RW
Chassis form factor
Wifi Enabled

My existing PC is not performing as well as it used to. It's about 6 years old, and I think there may be something wrong with the MOBO. The BIOS menu is very slow to use (5-10 seconds between menu selections), and the machine is quite slow to boot. It's just not meeting my needs any more.

I use the PC primarily for game development and media creation (so running the resource hog that is the Adobe Suite, and Unity), but also for some gaming.

The only thing I think I could put in my new PC from my old one is the HDD.
This is a real shame, because the GTX 960 has performed pretty well for me, but the current PSU in the new PC isn't powerful enough, and doesn't even have the required connectors.

I'm considering returning the new PC in favor of just buying the following:
New MOBO and CPU
Additional RAM (at least 16GB)
Another HDD (at least another TB)

I have a budget of about $900 CAD, taxes in.

I really don't know much about about MOBOs, and a bit about CPUs, but not as much as I would like to, so it would be nice to have some experienced help.

With the following constraints, what upgrades would you pick (or should I just stick with the new HP):

  • ■Need new MOBO and CPU
    ■At least 16 GB RAM
■Addtional 1TB storage (not necessary, but nice to have)

and compatible with the following components which I already have:

  • ■Antec 520W High Current Gamer M
    ■Cooler Master CM12V
    ■MSI GTX 960 2G
    ■Hitachi HDS721010CLA630 SATA 1TB HDD

Here are the components I'm currently considering.

Here's an alternate list with a cheaper MOBO and RAM

Let me know what you think of these components, or if I'm looking at upgrading the wrong stuff completely.

Any help is really appreciated (I only have 11 days left to return my new PC).

Thanks!
-Jake

Thanks, I look forward to seeing it.

Consider a GPU upgrade in the future to something like an 1180 when it launches.

Thanks a ton for this. I've heard good things about the Ryzen, but wasn't sure.

I see you've edited this list, removing the Cooler and PSU. Are you fairly confident my existing hardware will work well with the configuration you've listed?

Great! Thanks again. I ran a benchmark with my current configuration. I'll post both the previous bench and the one with the new hardware once I get everything.
