Hello,

I'm planning on using my own Apple Timecapsule Router for Verizon Internet service. The Verizon ONT box is has already been installed in the basement of my apartment according to my landlord, but only the coax cable has been run from the basement up to my 2nd floor apartment, not the Ethernet connection from the ONT box. My Apple router only has an Ethernet connection, no coax cable. I told Verizon I will not be paying to rent or buy one of their routers, so my question is how do I go about converting the coax cable Internet input into a Ethernet input to connect to my Apple router in the most cost-effective method possible? As mentioned above I am only getting internet service, no TV or phone.

Thanks

The Verizon ONT box converts their fiber optic signal into a traditional coax cable TV signal. To get Internet out of it, you need to rent a gateway from Verizon. They don't use the standard DOCSIS encoding the rest of the industry uses, at least not for their fiber-to-coax setups, so you cannot just buy a DOCSIS modem.

In theory, you can request Verizon set up the ethernet port on the ONT and run Internet over raw ethernet instead of coax (Verizon won't provide you with any technical support, but I hear it's an option). But since this is an apartment rather than a home, you'd effectively be depriving everyone else in the apartment of Internet as I believe that interface is either/or. You can use the coax port or the ethernet port...
the coax cable they ran up would only be for the TV service. normally the only COAX cable if this is cable internet would only be connected to the ONT which then you connect the router to. and from the looks of it like the rest of apples products it is limited in connections and features

You can use the coax port or the ethernet port, but not both. Their standard setup is the ONT puts the cable TV and Internet (and phone) signal onto a single coax cable, and their gateway splits it back up in one of your rooms. (Disclaimer: This is based on when I had Verizon FIOS about 5 years ago. Things may have changed.)

Internet in apartments can be done in many different ways. Some apartments get a single Internet connection and distribute it to the units via their own router (often via VDSL over the apartment's internal phone lines). Others allow phone or cable companies direct access to the individual units. How are the other apartment tenants getting their Internet? You will likely have to get it the same way.
