I just fried my psu. I was playing bf1 all night at 1440p 60fps. Smelled something burnt and pc randomly shut off. Had it for 3 years. Put in my old 300w psu pc turns on however I cant connect the 8 pin to gpu since I don't have 1 on that psu. Tried going into bios but can't. Is it bc my gpu doesn't have its 8 pin?

Solution
If a Hardware Issue: If you can access the BIOS the CPU is ok, the GPU needs another PSU with better wattage and the 8 pin connector.

If a Windows (software) issue: Windows not loading has nothing to do with the CPU or GPU... it can be a HDD or Windows issue depending on how far after the BIOS post it gets.

a) An HDD or MBR/GPT issue may display a "OS not found message" or "bootable drive not found"
b) a Windows issue can display a boot error message or it may start loading Windows and return to the BIOS.

Ignore this: I see I answered to late... page refresh issue.

My cpu is the i7 2600k I haven't overclocked yet and not planning to btw. So turning on the pc everything sounds normal. The fans are spinning as much as they would spin if I was loging into windows so cpu should be fine. Also gpu leds shine but fans don't spin bc of no 8 pin. Thoughts?

The psu I had was 550w and my system used about 500w when playing games. Do you think a higher watt psu will be better? Also have you heard of the company nitrox for psu? Are they any good? A retail store has them thats y I am asking.

In the 3 years you've had your system, did you bother to put any fresh TIM on your CPU or GPU? It sounds like your PSU is working, because you said you're still getting power to your fans & I assume, your basic case lights. Does your system make any beeps when you turn it on, or what do the numbers say on the diagnostic led say, if anything? It sounds like you fried your gpu or cpu, rather than your psu. Or.... otoh, it could be your PSU as well, but just part of it. Among other possibilities.

It is possible, depending on your CPU settings & system. Am assuming you mean your CPU temp? You smelled something burning, you thought it came from your PSU, ya? Check the TIM on your CPU just to be on the safe side, regardless what your bios says. Also, it'd be very helpful if you got up close & personal with whatever component you smelled burning. Use those olfactory senses, where is it localized? Your PSU?

Update. Turns out it boots cpu is just fine. I forgot to plug in the sata hdd cable bc the other 1 from the other psu was plugged in. So only thing to test for now is gpu. How can I do this if I don't have an 8 pin? Ty

I was panicking a lot there but everything's fine in the end. Rookie mistake. Also the part that smelled burnt was in fact the psu. Thank god it didn't destroy my componets with it

I see I guess I will hae to buy a new psu and see. So I want to get it today from a store rather than ordering online. Store has some psu from Nitrox. Planning to buy a 650w one but is it a trustworth brand. Price is 50 euro don't know how much that is in pounds or us dollars.

Can't go to the store at the moment bc it's not open and I will be busy througout the morning so going to update you in the afternoon or in a hfew hours bc of the time zones. I doubt the gpu is dead since it's at the top of the pcie slots far away from the psu and I could not smell anything burnt on it and it was running bf1 perfect before the big crash. If it is though I still have its warranty which is great

65% advertised efficiency? A "650W" PSU with a single 6+2 connector? Passive PFC in freaking 2017? That PSU looks like literal garbage. If someone broke into my house and tried to install that PSU in my PC - admittedly a highly unusual scenario -- I'd give them the €49.99 to *not* install it.

There are some good Cooler Masters, but those tend to be on the high-end. Usually you can find Corsair CXMs (you want teh black and white label, not the green one) or Seasonic 520s fairly widespread on the budget end. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the availability of PSUs in Cyprus, sadly.
