I was thinking of getting an i7 7700k and I have old ram (i7 7700k RAM Compatability) I was wondering if that ram would work or if I should get a new one. If I would have to get a new one, would this ram work (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232175&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=). And I also was wondering, I have a gtx 960 rn and might upgrade in the future (to like a 1060 6gb), is it smart to get the 7700k or should I get something else?

Solution
No, the old RAM will not work as it is DDR3. When you upgrade your motherboard and CPU, new RAM also has to come with it. The new RAM you selected should work just fine as it is DDR4. Make sure your motherboard can support your CPU as well.

I have a acer aspire tc-710 motherboard. Will that support a 7700k? If it doesn't will it support a 6700k? Or neither

(I basically bought the acer pc, and took the motherboard and other stuff and built my "own" pc. And will the 7700k or 6700k support or go well with a gtx 960 for now (as I said, I will be upgrading from that soon)

Just come back on the forum or PM me, making another thread will obviously draw attention, maybe even from someone more knowledgeable than me.

Alright thanks!

If that motherboard doesn't have a BIOS/firmware update that supports Kaby Lake CPUs then the i7-7700K won't be recognized.

The chances are good that the Skylake i7-6700K will work.

how do I check if it recognizes the 7700k? and your saying I should probably go for the 6700k instead

Acer's support website doesn't list any Aspire TC-710 BIOS updates that Support KBL CPU so the i7-7700K won't be supported.

Acer did sell an Aspire TC-710 model with a Skylake i7-6700 non-K processor.

So with my motherboard that I have now, I could only use a 6700 regular, but to use a 7700k or 6700k, I would have to purchase a new motherboard? if that is so, could you send me a link to a motherboard that isnt too expensive and could handle/support a 7700k or 6700k?

I used a new computer case (that already has 3 fans in for cooling) and I believe it is a medium size. I was just looking to pretty much upgrade everything. And i dont really know what my budget is yet, I was just trying to upgrade my cpu, ram, and motherboard if I have to. I already found ram that is usable and idk about the motherboard + cpu yet

Choose the appropriate motherboard form factor and on how much you want to spend:

All of those motherboards in that list support the i7-6700K and the i7-7700K.

ok thanks and wait would this one work? : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130985&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Motherboards+-+Intel-_-N82E16813130985&gclid=Cj0KCQjw--DLBRCNARIsAFIwR274syPm9YpVOoSbZ7kJWC8Wb0dMrGYYBMKEF_uzB4t-3X66hwUrFCUaAoWYEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

That motherboard only supports memory speeds up to DDR4 2400 and doesn't support CPU overclocking of unlocked K series processors.

You were thinking of buying the faster DDR4 2666 RAM in your original post. That extra 266MHz is wasted/unusable.
