Would a simple displayport to HDMI adapter allow me to run my display at 60 hz or do I need and active adapter ? My display is capable of 60 hz at 4K, Mt Dell with a GTX 1070 has HDMI 2.0 and can do it, but my other machine equipped with dual R9 390xs in crossfire can not due to the HDMI being 1.4. For the record I am using a 50 inch 4k tv. Has 4 4k@60hz ports

Solution
I was basically just saying if you have an existing dp of 2.0 and using a hdmi 1.0 The bandwidth wouldn't be the same or visa versa.

Either way. I highly doubt any of that will be an issue. Even 1.0 versions have decent cable bandwidth. It's not something I believe would limit you getting what you are going for.
yes it should as bandwith between display port and HDMI ports are the same in general. (depending on if you are talking about display port 2.0 etc...)

However, you wont be able to use gsync or anything with an adaptor. It has to be display port directly connected to the monitors display port.

Well you bring up a good point, I will check the specs on the R9 cards. Fro what I have read I see most people used an active adapter to achieve the 60hz via the displayport out from the R9 390 to the HDMI on the display which are available but are 4x the cost of a simple DisplayPort to HDMI cable. As you stated I don't know if the displayports on the 390 is 2.0, Up to this point I had only used displayport to DVID but with this new display the problem has come up.

I do not want to convert the HDMI out of the 390x it has multiple display ports as well. My display only has HDMI 2.0 ports so I want to connect to the displayport output of the video card and connect to the HDMI on the display. I apologize if I misunderstood your meaning.

well one of us misunderstood the other, might have been me, converting dp to hdmi 2.0 should theoretically be ok.
