So last night i gamed Final fantasy XIV 5 hours straight and then right away shut down my pc . Today morning when i try to start up the pc, the fans are working and even the gpu but the beeper gives 1 long and 3 short beeps meaning AGP error which on this chipset basically means GPU error.

I figure out its my Sapphire R9 280x Vapor x that has died but i have too many questions. I always keep the temperatures in check and with the sufficient 80mm delta fans input cooling from the front the temps of the gpu never exceed 69°C but sometimes hit 70°C . I have never OC'ed it and have never tempered with it except for using the given sapphire TRIXX tool with which i set custom fancooling profile to 100% at 65°C . The GPU is out of warranty from april 2017 however this is an RMA'ed gpu . I got it RMA'ed back in april 2015 as the original one died due to short circuit. After checking the on a friend's pc i got sure of its death . About the gpu itself, after i removed it from my system i found some sort of oil on the backpart , pcb of the gpu and it was very little in amount and after rubbing it with finger it disappeared. Later i opened the GPU and found this kinda oily thing all across between the shroud and the pcb . Here i have uploaded how it looks like right after opening it. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B7K9guXcJuxgb1RUV0ZkcVpmTW8 . My guess is that the vapor chamber leaked but that is simply not possible for a card not so old and someone told me that with these kind of GPUs we have to let the system idle after heavy usage . But under 70s of temps shouldnt let that happen and i want to know how the gpu died and why could that be so.

My specs :-
CPU - AMD FX-8350
GPU - Sapphier AMD R9 280x
PSU - Antec VP650P v2
Mobo - Gigabyte GA 970A DS3P
Ram - 8 GB Gskil + 4 GB *2 Corsair DDR3 1600mhz
UPS - INTEX Gamma 1000va
Windows 10.1 Insider preview 16... Entrepreneur Edition

I'm not seeing anything oily in the pics? It does look like a couple of the thermal pads have melted somewhat though?

Unfortunately, cards can just sometimes die. Doesn't have to be heat/voltage related, although in this it might be - even though the "chip" itself was within safe temp ranges, doesn't necessarily mean other components were too.

I would suggest reaching out to Sapphire and see if there's any chance of an RMA. You're not a bunch past the "warranty" period, although it does appear Sapphire are difficult to deal with.

Their warranty terms would also suggest that the fact you've disassembled yourself would void your warranty:

Although I'm not sure how legal that...

The oily looking this is quite visible even in the pic. Look at the shroud , it has spots where theres residual oil marks and also dust and black stuff cocentration at those parts is visible as well. Also i am not talking about this oil in my main article, just that i try to start pc it doesnt display anything in the morning so i open the cabinet and i see the on the back part of gpu pcb ( the part that faces up in the cabinet) has some sort of very low amount of oil on it so i rub it with finger and the rest of it just vanishes. The smell that it gives as my pal told me is when one of his old CRT tv died and had a faulty transistor . The real question here was how on earth could some sort of oil go on top of gpu while it just rested in the pc overnight , for the oil to go up there either means that the oily thing is from the cpu fan as the spot of oil was directly below it ( altho i checked the cpu fan and it was completely dry everywhere) or someone pulled a prank which most likely no one did as there is no one to do it.

About RMA though, my gpu is 4 months out of warranty so i highly doubt sapphire would do anything for me now and the opening of gpu in my case doesnt void warranty. My last 280x which died due to short circuit was also disassembled by me before being handed over to the rma centre and they just gave me rma in a day.

Ik its all so weird and it doesnt make heads or tails but if it is not the vapor chamber that leaked then this is a good mystery.
