I'm going to have a PC built by a custom pc maker. What would you guys choose out of the GTX1060 6GB Vs RX580 8GB?

The GTX1060 works out roughly £20 cheaper.

Or is it worth paying £200 more for the GTX 1080? Not sure whether to go for that as I've been advised that GPUs shouldn't be future proofed due to their limited warranties.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Solution
Depends on the rest of your build. If going for 1080p, the 1060 is good enough. The 580 is similar to 1060. They trade blows from game to game. In some games 1060 performs better while the 580 in others, specially in DX12 titles.
However, if your monitor is 1440p/60hz or 1080p/144hz, a 1070 would be an ideal choice.
If your monitor is 1440p and 144hz then nothing short of 1080 will justify it.
Depends on the cpu as well.

With the prices the way they still seem to be right now the 1060 is the better deal and a lot cheaper as the AMD cards are still inflated price wise.

However if you are willing to pay the price for an RX 580 then go with a much faster GTX 1070 for around the same price.

Cheers.

CPU would be an I7-7700. Would mainly be using it for single player games and leaving the multiplayer for my PS4. I'd be looking to hook it up to my TV.

With the exception of a few games like Sniper Elite 4 and Battlefield 1, the two GPUs are essentially even in performance (the 580 responds better to those games). Also depending on variant, the GTX 1060 can overclock pretty good unlike the 580. Otherwise for 1080p and 60FPS, either GPU is a good match for that resolution. For longevity, history has shown AMD GPUs lasting longer and performing better over time than their Nvidia counterparts. But I never keep my GPUs past three years at the most, so it's a moot point for me. For others, maybe not.

With the build I have it works out the GTX1060 is roughly £20 cheaper. If i were to go for the GTX 1070 it would come up £140 more and that would include changing case.

When it come to the power unit is it worth paying getting the one above what you actually need just to be safe?

The 1060 should be good enough for the TV, unless its one of the state of the art Smart TV, with high resolution and low response time.
By power unit, if you mean the PSU, then a quality 450w-550w PSU is always recommended, than a cheap higher wattage unit.

I see. Thank you for your advice. One final question. Is it possible to run games from an external Hard Drive? The HDD in question would be the HDD that comes as standard with the PS4.
