I noticed a burning smell from my PC. I decided to clean out the dust from my Intel heat-sink CPU cooler, and I don't have any thermal paste. I put the heat-sink back on without replacing the thermal paste, and now I'm getting fps spikes. Could that be causing this? Any help is appreciated,

Solution
It is very possible your lack of thermal compound is the culprit, the thermal compound is a fairly important part of the puzzle.

It will greatly help your CPU transfer heat into the heat-sink you have sitting on top of it.

You can use many things as a make-shift thermal compound, but to avoid any further thermal damage you should avoid playing games. your CPU might be thermal throttling to protect itself from damage.

Keep a close eye on your temperatures, you really need to apply some thermal paste.

Now that you have had a good laugh ... time for some learnin'

You can spend a lot more but the only thing I have seen better than Shin Etsu is the liquid metal (not for ya 1st time) and expensive grizzly stuff

Recommend avoiding AS5 because of the capacitance and curing issues on their home page.
