My friend bought a 6700k and a good water cooler but took his overclock off. how do i convince him to overclock?

He said it was spiking up to 60-65 degrees a lot while it was a lot cooler on average.
He's got some great silicon it goes up to 4.7 or higher.
How do I explain to him that those spikes are still well below any temperature he should be worried about. What is a low voltage and clock I can recommend for him if he wants to extend the life of his processor but have a slight overclock?
I'd like to see him keep it around at least 4.5. How can he spend all that money and just give up and turn off his overclock.
What temperature should I tell him is the threshold to start worrying about i7 skylake temps?
Also we have a different friend who has a ryzen 1700 or 1800 and a stock cooler. What oc should he put it on with just a stock cooler?
With intel temperature spiking so bad in skylake and kabylake is ryzen the new overclock king for temperatures?

If he does not want to OC he does not want to OC.
That being sayd, 4.5 - 4.6GHz should be stable at max 1.3volts. Intel themself say you should not go over. Then again if temps dont spike there is no real problem going for 1.35 volts.

When you start to see 80 celcius you should be backing off but at 60-65 he is in a very safe zone.

And with a modest OC with modest volts his CPU would most likely last longer than his motherboard or any other device to be honest. He is gonna upgrade to a new computer before it dies.

Intel vs AMD... Depends, with stock TIM between the cpu die and the heatspreader the i7 - i9 series atm is bad... intel cheaps out. And from MY perspective none of the cpu`s are any good without a delid and swapping the bad TIM for liquid metal, but thats me and not by a long shot what most people means.
But for gaming AMD cant atm push as high FPS as intel. Then again that is a loaded answer since even in my opinion... 150fps vs 130fps... yea big difference aint it....

My 7700k is running 5GHz and at full toture stress test for an hour I never go above 58-59 celcius and my cpu has been delided and swapped for liquid metal. So its about the same as AMD`s solder on the die to heatspreader. Not easy to get and Ryzen to that speeds.

Question is do you really need it. And overall more cores beats ghz (ofc depends on what you are using the computer for)

What water cooler? Its kind of a waste of money to water cool a 6700k and not overclock, a cheap air cooler would have sufficed for stock clocks.

60-65c in a cpu stress test or gaming? For a stress test those temps are excellent for 4.7ghz. 1.2v-1.35v vcore is typically whats recommended for daily use if you can keep the cpu cool at said voltage.

The 6700k will likely be totally obsolete and due for an upgrade long before it dies, this is something people just dont seem to understand they see modern cpu's as fragile. Assuming you keep temps in check and dont go crazy with cpu voltage that 6700k is not going to die anytime soon. I have seen cpu's used in servers run at 90c 100% load 24 hours a day 7 days a week and last for years.

I would keep it under 85c to be comfortable in stress tests, it will throttle at 100c. Gaming I would expect it to run anywhere between 40c-65c depending on the game and the cooler they are using.

The 6700k does not have much of an issue with temp spikes from my understanding, that is mostly relegated to the kaby lake 7700k and only some of them not all, my 7700k does not seem to have any of theses temp spikes I hear so much about.

Ryzen cpu's can get pretty hot and depending on what chip you buy you will only likly be able to oc it a few hundred mhz. But ryzen doesn't really have these temp spike issues like intel does as the IHS is soldered to the cpu die for maximum heat transfer, they way you should build a cpu.

I personally don't have my CPU OC'd right now, but instead, it's massively undervolted. The performance I get is perfectly adequate for my needs, and I more appreciate the decrease in heat and noise it dumps into my office.

That said, 65c is actually quite low for a 6700K. Have him read the temperature guide on here.

He had every intention of oc but got squeemish when his cpu started to tempurature spike to 65. I just need to put it into words that he's well below temps to worry about and you guys helped thanks.

Because you can :D

How many people out there is it that has a car that goes 200+ mph but has hardly ever broken 100 mph in it :D

actually he plays arma 3 online so he goes down to about 30-40 frames quite often on that clock. fk that game.
